What is Darjeeling first flush tea?

What is Darjeeling first flush tea?

A person’s preference in tea is a very personal choice. There is a plethora of diverse options available and each provide different flavours, textures and experiences. Despite the array of diversity, the most sought-after tea is the prestigious first flush tea. So what is it?

First flush teas are prestigious for their delicacy and sweet notes. A flush is actually the term for a harvest season and each season is different from the previous years. External factors such as the amount or temperature of rainfall can affect the growth of plants such as the perennial Camellia sinesis, of which all steeps stem from. The average productive lifespan of tea trees range from 30-50 years but can also be up to 120 years.

Indian teas fall under a strict tea grading system that allows purchasers to easily identify he quality of the tea. The grading system takes in to account the age of the leaf, the size and the wholeness. The grading system uses acronyms and the more letters against the tea, the better the quality.

First flush teas are traditionally lighter than other teas that go on to grown on the same plant. The Darjeeling tea is typically listed as a black tea, yet the first flush tea is vastly lighter and more delicate than a traditional black tea.

Adding additional ingredients when enjoying a first flush tea is frowned upon. Milk, sugar or even sweetener is thought to contaminate the subtle flavours and the tea is primarily served unadultered.

The floral flavours in first flush tea are prominent as the tea is harvested when the weather is warming and the tea tree is developing its first blossoms and flowers of the season.

Darjeeling tea can be extremely versatile and the flavours and textures range greatly from the first flush, or the highly oxidized black tea. It is the perfect tea type to suit any palate which is why it is traditionally deemed the ‘champagne of teas.’

We here at the Tea Campaign are famous for our fair-trade, organic, high quality Darjeeling first flush teas.
