How to store your organic Darjeeling tea

How to store your organic Darjeeling tea

So you've purchased some top quality Darjeeling tea, and are ready to reap the rewards of your investment. In order to get the most out of every cup and ensure your tea goes the distance, you should pay careful attention to the method of storage. Whether you've gone for Darjeeling black tea or Darjeeling green tea, follow these simple tips to prolong the life and improve the taste of your favourite tea:

1. Store in an airtight container

Like most perishable goods, sealing tea away from oxygen and other elements found in the air will make it last much longer. As a dried substance, tea leaves can also be spoiled by exposure to excess moisture, so using an airtight container will help maintain the optimal moisture content of your leaves. Add in the benefit of avoiding dust contamination and using an airtight container seems like a no-brainer! You can also buy our Darjeeling teas in airtight tea-tins.

2. Keep away from direct sunlight and warm temperatures

Just like dust and moisture, too much heat will spoil your brew. Close proximity to heat sources will affect your tea chemically and physically, resulting in a bitter taste or complete degradation of the flavour. Choose a cool, dark cupboard or drawer to hide your tea away and prevent this from happening - just make sure your chosen hiding spot isn't too close to the oven, grill, or anything else that emits heat.

3. Don't mix with any strong odours

Tea is susceptible to contamination from food and substances that give off strong odours - being porous, tea leaves will absorb these flavours, which could taint your next cup. Think cheese, garlic, onions, spices... Anything that affects your nose will affect your tea leaves too!

4. Separate your blends

Just as you wouldn't want two of your favourite cheeses rubbing up against one another, you shouldn't keep one type of tea too close to any other. Particularly strong flavoured tea, like jasmine or green, will overpower a lighter Earl Grey blend. As long as the leaves are in a sealed container, cross-contamination can probably be avoided, but make sure you clearly label your jars so you don't mistakenly mix the blends.

Following these tips will ensure purity, quality and integrity...which means a great cup of tea!
