The science behind green tea

Studies have shown that drinking green tea helps our bodies to burn more fat. Green tea contains many antioxidants. These include:

Caffeine

A naturally occurring stimulant found in green tea and coffee. It helps stimulate our brains and nervous system, which increases our alertness while preventing fatigue. 

Catechins

Catechins are 4 molecules that are prevalent in green tea. The most potent of these molecules is Epigallocatechin gallate (also known as EGCG). EGCG works by helping boost your metabolism. The leaves of green tea contain around 7380 mg of EGCG per 100 grams. Drinking green tea allows the molecules to be absorbed into the body and helps ignite your metabolism. 

Drinking green tea before exercise will increase the number of calories you burn. Why? Caffeine stimulates our nervous system, which helps increase blood flow throughout our bodies. This in turn, increases your heart rate, helping get your body into the ‘fat-burning’ zone. Both caffeine and EGCG help break down fat cells by transporting it to the bloodstream. This turns the fat cells into energy for muscle cells. The more fat cells that enter the bloodstream, the more energy your muscles have to help you burn fat. 

Don’t drink too much

Before you brew another cup of Darjeeling Tea, just be wary not to over consume. It is recommended that you drink 2 cups of green tea a day. The best times to drink are upon waking in the morning and one mid-afternoon. Due to its low caffeine content (between 24-40mg) it won’t give you a ‘caffeine crash'. However, it is still caffeine, so try not to drink green tea before bed time.
